Financial-sector indicators that signal the real economy

Before a slowdown appears in a company's revenue, it is already visible in a handful of banking-sector indicators. A guide to reading them.

Owners of small and medium-sized companies often only notice a change in the climate when customers start paying late or when a bank tightens credit conditions. By the time it is visible in operations, the shock has already arrived — and the room for manoeuvre is narrower.

There are a few financial-sector indicators that change tone months before it is felt in the real economy. They are worth tracking, even if you are not a financial analyst.

Three indicators that give an early picture

Growth of bank lending to the corporate sector. When the annual growth of the corporate loan portfolio falls below inflation, it usually means banks see risk that is not yet reflected in company figures. Banks slow down first.

Share of non-performing loans (NPL). If the NPL ratio rises for two consecutive quarters, even from a low level, it means some companies are already struggling to service their debt. That is a signal to build your own cash-flow buffer.

Changes in EURIBOR and corporate lending rates. When benchmark rates move more than 100 basis points in a short period, this directly affects the cost of your existing debt if it is linked to a variable rate.

What to do with this information

The best time to look at these indicators is not when the situation is already bad, but while everything is "normal". Concrete implications for an owner:

  • Refinance ahead of the wave. If conditions are favourable now and indicators signal tightening — extend the maturity of existing loans or fix your interest rate.
  • Cash reserve. The target is 60 to 90 days of operating costs held in reserve, not as "dead money" but as insurance.
  • Reduce exposure to individual customers. If a single customer makes up more than 30% of revenue, it is time to reduce or insure that risk.

Conclusion

Financial-sector indicators do not predict the future with certainty, but they give a few months'' head start to owners who follow them. That head start often makes the difference between a company that uses the next crisis as an opportunity — and one that just survives it.
